Basic
Keelboat Sailing I
This course
is designed for the beginning sailor who is interested in learning
the basic fundamentals of sailing. The class, held aboard a Santana
22, consists of up to four students and an instructor. Most of the
class time is spent on the water, where students gain practical
experience steering the boat, raising and reefing the sails, and
learning safety procedures. Basic Keelboat Sailing I allows students
to make decisions and build confidence on San Francisco Bay, preparing
them for Basic Keelboat Sailing II and American Sailing Association
BKS certification.

Basic
Keelboat Sailing II
This course
is a continuation of the Basic Keelboat Sailing I program and helps
students refine skills learned in BKS This class will also introduces
new basic techniques to improve maneuverability and control. The
class, held aboard 22-27 foot keelboats, consists of up to four
students and an instructor. Most of the class time is spent on the
water, giving students additional experience making decisions and
further building their confidence on San Francisco Bay. BKS II allows
students to become officially certified at the Basic Keelboat level
by the American Sailing Association.

Basic
Coastal Cruising
This course
is designed for students who have completed the Basic Keelboat Sailing
program and wish to gain the experience and qualifications necessary
to rent a boat of up to 27 feet at Spinnaker Sailing. The class,
held aboard a Santa Cruz 27, consists of up to four students and
an instructor. Most class time is spent on the water, where students
gain the experience and confidence necessary to safely skipper a
boat in the challenging conditions of San Francisco Bay. Students
learn, among many other subjects, how to dock a boat with an auxiliary
outboard engine, how and when to reef sails properly, how to anchor,
and how to deal with emergencies and everything a new sailor needs
to know to have an enjoyable day cruising on the Bay. After achieving
Basic Coastal Cruising Certification, students need to skipper a
boat of 20 to 27 feet at least five times to be eligible for the
Intermediate Coastal Cruising Class.

Intermediate
Coastal Cruising
This class
is for graduates of the Basic Coastal Cruising program who want
to qualify to charter 30 to 32 foot sailboats at Spinnaker Sailing.
The course gives students an opportunity to take a mid-size sailboat
on an overnight cruise. Classes run Friday evening to Sunday evening
(48 hours) and are typically held aboard 31 to 32 foot cruising
sailboats. Classes are held on the north side of San Francisco Bay
(Angel Island, Treasure Island, etc.) where students make confidence-building
leadership decisions on docking and sailing in the Bay's challenging
conditions. To qualify for the class, students must have already
achieved ASA Basic Coastal Cruising certification, and must have
at least 5 days' sailing experience as skipper of a 22-29 foot boat.
ASA Intermediate
Coastal Cruising (Bareboat Charter) certification is awarded upon
successful completion of the on-water and written portions of this
course; graduates will be certified to sail 30-32 foot yachts in
San Francisco Bay. At more-sedate locations outside the Bay, ICC-certified
sailors may be permitted to charter larger boats, up to 50'.

Advanced
Coastal Cruising
This class
is for graduates of the Intermediate Coastal Cruising program who
want to qualify to charter 34 to 50 foot sailboats at Spinnaker
Sailing. The course gives students an opportunity to take a large
sailboat on an overnight cruise, including a 20 mile night sail
and a 20 mile daysail. Classes run Friday evening to Sunday evening
(48 hours) and are typically held aboard 40 to 45 foot cruising
sailboats. Classes are held on San Francisco Bay, where students
make confidence-building leadership decisions sailing in the Bay's
challenging conditions. To qualify for the class, students must
have already achieved ASA Intermediate Coastal Cruising and Coastal
Navigation certification, and must have at least 3 days' sailing
experience as skipper of a 29-33 foot boat.
ASA Advanced
Coastal Cruising certification is awarded upon successful completion
of the on-water and written portions of this course; graduates will
be certified to sail yachts up to 50 feet in length by day or night
on coastal waters nearly anywhere on the planet.
